Motorcycle Awareness

May 15, 2012 at 12:27 amCategory:Uncategorized

As the temperatures heat up, you should be aware that there will be more and more motorcycles to share the road with. They can be harder to see than a car in your mirror so always take the time to look an extra time before you make a turn or you change lanes. With the high price of fuel these days, don’t be surprised to find many people investing in a motorcycle they can use to commute to and from work with.

Many people fail to realize those riding a motorcycle have the same rights on the road. However, you also need to understand that they have less to protect them. If you were to get into an accident in your car or pickup, you have that framework around you. For someone on a motorcycle, it is all open around them. Be courteous and give them enough room so that they can safely share the road with you and others.

If you ride a motorcycle, make sure you are also aware of the limited view that other driver’s may have of you. Don’t be out there in the roads unless you have enough experience and the proper licensing to operate a motorcycle. Do all you can to protect your body including wearing boots, long sleeved shirts, and long jeans. Make sure you also wear a helmet that fits properly. Any passengers should also be making safety a priority.

Keep in mind that you too have to obey all of the rules of the road when you are on a motorcycle. Obey speed limits and don’t be distracted by people around you or try to use a mobile device while moving. Don’t weave in and out of traffic, pass on the right shoulder, or pass between two vehicles that are in side by side lanes.

Helping your Child get a Summer Job

May 9, 2012 at 9:30 pmCategory:Uncategorized

It is important for children to learn the value of money, and that it doesn’t just magically appear. Helping your child to get a summer job is important as it provides them some spending money and it also teaches them about hard work and responsibility. With so many of the jobs in fast food being taken by adults in this tough economy, many teens aren’t going to be able to get their foot in that door.

Ask your boss if they could use some extra summer help. This could be in the business side of things or the office portion of it. In many businesses, it does get busy during the summer but not enough to hire someone full time. Perhaps your child could work a few days a week to take care of those extra needs.

You can help your child to get a summer job by starting early looking around. In the weeks leading up to the end of school, help them to make some calls and to pick up job applications. Don’t wait until school is out as that is when everyone else will be doing it. Help them to fill out the applications neatly and completely. They should also dress well when picking them up and dropping them off.

Ask your friends and family about any possible job openings. It could be odd jobs too such as doing their grass, painting their house, and more. Childcare and summer camps may be opportunities in your area that your child could learn from and also make some money at the same time. Talk to your local job service too as many of those locations also have summer listings for the youth.

It can be helpful to do some mock interviews with your child too. This will help them to make a great impression when they go in for real interview. They need to be able to show they are motivated, they are friendly, and that they really do want to work.

Keeping your Kids on Track in School as Summer Approaches

May 2, 2012 at 3:44 pmCategory:Uncategorized

As it gets closer to the end of school, kids seem to have a harder time staying focused. They are enjoying the warmer weather and it gets dark later and later. All of this adds up to kids that want to be outdoors having fun and staying up later. Then they don’t want to get up in the morning for school like they should. You may want to give them more free time outdoors at night, but structure for getting homework done and bedtime is very important.

The calendar may be filling up with the end of year activities too and you have to work hard to keep them all organized. However, don’t feel like your family has to attend everything offered. It may be necessary to pick out those things your children really want to be part of and leave the rest behind. Make sure your kids eat right and that they stay hydrated. The sun can zap them of energy and they may be doing more outside at school too including field trips and track meets.

Remind your child that you are proud of them and that they are doing well with their school work. This is going to work better to motivate them to get it done as the school year winds down instead of nagging them to get it done. Remind them that they need to do it before they go out and enjoy various activities in the evening.

Try to scale back the family weekend activities too if you can help it during this period of time. This will give your kids a chance to sleep in and to have time to relax. Watch some movies and make popcorn for a stress free family night that everyone can be involved with. These last few weeks will be gone before you know it and then the summer fun can begin!

Talking to Children about Divorce

April 28, 2012 at 10:51 pmCategory:Uncategorized

The decision to get a divorce is extremely difficult but unfortunately very common in today’s society. If you have children, talking to them about what will be going on is very important. Children often feel that they are to blame when there is a divorce, so from the start you want to make it very clear that they aren’t. Talk to them together is a good idea if you can provide a united front for them.

The children need to know that both parents love them very much and that won’t change due to the divorce. Hopefully, you have some idea about where the children will stay and what the arrangements will be for them to see the other parent. They should feel like they can communicate with both parents at any time. With the use of computers and phones this is easier than it was in the past.

Allow your children to ask questions when you tell them about the divorce. Be patient with them and allow them to work through their emotions. They may cry, get angry, or become withdrawn. Make sure they know that they can come to you at any time if they have more questions or need further information.

Try to get an agreement in place before you talk to the children about divorce regarding what will be shared. For example, if the reason for the divorce is due to one person having an affair, will that be disclosed to them? Chances are that the kids will ask why the divorce is happening. Make a decision about what will be said and how much of the details will be offered.

The age of the children can also determine how much you would like to say to them about the situation. It may be best if there are gaps in ages for them to all get the basic information together. Then you can also talk to each of them individually so that you can focus on their needs regarding the divorce.

Tips to Save Money at the Gas Pumps

April 23, 2012 at 4:17 pmCategory:Uncategorized

The price per gallon of fuel at the pumps is making many people upset. It has jumped dramatically in the last six weeks with no signs of going the other direction. There are some ways that you can save money on the gas you need to get around though. Make sure your vehicle is in good condition. If you have any issues, the cost of repairs is going to be less than the gas you will waste.

Compare prices for gas locally too. You will find that it can vary by a few cents in a small proximity. Those few cents of savings are going to add up quickly for you. Many retailers offer cards that give you discounts too. It only takes a bit of time to apply for such a program and then you can reap the savings every single time you go to that location to get gas.

Try to plan your outings so that you get the most efficiency out of the gas you use. Going to do all your errands at once and making a list saves you time. Don’t go to the store several times a week. Plan a menu and then get all you need for the week at one time. Pay bills online when you can and even shop online so that you save gas.

Walk where you can or ride a bike. In addition to being able to save on gas, you will be able to get some more exercise. If you can car pool with someone to work or for the activities your children are involved with, that is a great idea. Finally, if you drive a gas guzzling vehicle it may be time to really consider something more economical. Then you can fill up your tank and drive more miles before you have to do so again.

Summer Water Sports Safety

April 19, 2012 at 3:42 pmCategory:Uncategorized

When it comes to the summer time fun, water sports is high up on that list. Many people want to take part in swimming, boating, and so much more. Safety has to be a big part of successfully doing so. Any time you are involved in water sports you should be wearing a good fitting life jacket. This pertains to adults and to children without exception. It doesn’t matter how experienced you are or how good of a swimmer you are.

Boating accidents occur more frequently than we think, so you have to be diligent about speed and about others in the water. Don’t operate a boat on your own unless you have been well trained. Never get into a boat or allow them to operate it with you participating in a water sport if they don’t have skills or they are under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Never be out in the water on your own. You need to have at least one other person with you. Pay attention to signs too about where you can swim or boat. Never go into locations that are off limits as you are only asking for trouble. It can be a good idea to learn about safety for helping others too. If they are in a bad situation in the water you want to be able to help instead of feeling helpless as you watch the event unfold.

When it comes to summer water sports safety, we all have to be responsible and pay attention to our surroundings. An accident can occur in the blink of an eye and ruin that fun. Know your limits, use safety gear, and pay attention to what others are doing around you. Such details can make a huge impact on how your day on the water turns out.

Asking for Forgiveness

April 15, 2012 at 9:14 pmCategory:Uncategorized

It may be hard, but sometimes asking for forgiveness is the right thing to do. It really doesn’t matter if the situation occurred recently or a long time ago. You can be sure that such a sincere apology will go a long way. It can also help to reduce any anxiety or guilt that you have about the situation. Asking for forgiveness doesn’t always mean you will get it, but if you have tried then you should feel good about it.

When possible, ask for forgiveness in person. However, you don’t want to put the other party on the spot. Perhaps sending them a letter or a phone call to ask if you can meet with them in a neutral location is the best course of action to take. Then they have an opportunity to respond to that request. Most people are willing to give the time involved for this to occur.

Perception can play a huge role in not asking for forgiveness, but don’t let it get in your way. Never assume that you already know how the other party will react. Give them the opportunity to accept your apology. Be sincere with what you say and how you say it. People will have respect for you when you do so. It can be hard to be in such a role but it is important. You don’t want to have regrets later in life that you lost a relationship with someone because you never made such an effort.

Also, through the process of asking for forgiveness, you get the chance to also see how it is in that role. The next time someone approaches you to forgive them for something you will be more inclined to listen and perhaps to accept what they have to say to you. Being on the flip side of that can really alter your take on all of it.

Good Habits for Life you should Incorporate

April 11, 2012 at 6:36 pmCategory:Uncategorized

When it comes to being able to live a long and healthy life, you need to work on some good habits. They may not seem like such a big deal when you are young, but they will make a huge impact as you get older. If the thought of not being able to get around well or to experience fun when you are retired bothers you, then make sure you are healthy enough to enjoy those golden years.

Eating healthy is a good habit that will pay off no matter how old you are. Not only in terms of what you eat but how much you eat. This doesn’t mean you can’t ever have fast food or that you can’t enjoy dessert, but it does mean that such food items should be consumed only in moderation.

When you eat right and you drink lots of water your body has what it needs to function well. This can also flush out toxins that can cause your immune system to get weak. Avoid the use of alcohol or illegal drugs too because they can create a variety of problems for your body to deal with. They can also cause you to age faster than the number of years you really are.

Daily exercise is so important for the joints and the muscles. If you aren’t moving like you should then it is only going to get harder as you get older. Take action now to improve your mobility and you will be surprised. If you need to lose weight, do it now because the older you get the harder it will become to take it off. If you dread exercise, find activities you love so that you are encouraged to stick with them.

Don’t go to the doctor only when you are sick, an annual check up is very important. Learn your family history too so that you can be screened for cholesterol problems, heart problems, and more that may run in your family. Prevention and early intervention are key to good habits for life.
